Pahalgam is almost 95km from Srinagar but isn’t included in Srinagar tour packages. It is a famous hill station as it is the starting point of ‘Amarnath Yatra’, conducted every year in the month of July and August. The place is also popular amongst filmmakers who flock to the location for shooting the song sequence and romantic scenes. Some popular sightseeing place in Pahalgam are Chandanwari, Betaab Valley and Aru valley. Since winters here are often very snowy, wearing gum boots is a necessity for a comfortable walk. Trekking and rafting is a must thing to do in Pahalgam. The water flowing in Lidder River flows with usher speed giving it a white look. It a full-day excursion spot as options for overnight stay is very limited. Hence, it is advisable to come back to the city and stay comfortably.
The easiest way to reach Pahalgam is through private cabs or taxis. You can hire a cab from Jammu station for Rs 4000 or you can take a shared cab till Srinagar which will charge you up to Rs 400 maximum and get off at Khanbal to hire three wheeler auto to Anantnag. Here you need to rent another Sumo till Pahalgam which would charge you Rs 100 per person in off season but up to Rs 700 in peak season. This would be the cheapest way to reach Pahalgam but would take over 12 hours to reach. Since it lies on a completely different route, travel operators do not include this destination unless one mentions it exclusively. The best time to visit Pahalgam is between April-June but since it is a peak season, it would definitely burn a hole in your pocket.
