Sonamarg is just 84km from Srinagar and is one of the extended inclusions in Srinagar trip. The place is famous for its golden meadows and backdrop of snowy mountains. A yearly rafting competition is also held here which witnesses participation from all over the world. All roads to Sonamarg remain blocked during peak winters as heavy snowfall clogged the roads. The routes are opened again after April when tourists can visit the place to enjoy the ice-clad hills and beautiful landscape of glacier. Sonamarg is also famous for trekking expedition as Sonamarg lies on the way to Leh which is also known as trekker’s paradise.
Sonamarg can be reached via cabs and buses, available from Srinagar. Usually, the site is included in Kashmir tour packages, even in the budgeted ones. The best time to visit Sonamarg is between April to September. Although, the monsoon brings brief spell of rain in the month of July and August but are not as heavy but frequent. The main attraction of Sonamarg is Thajiwas Glacier where accessibility is only through ponies or local cars. Usually, there are three points which are included on this local car trip-Thajiwas Glacier, Fish Pond & Sarbal Park. The asking price for a local car goes as high as Rs 10,000 but you can negotiate and can settle for Rs 2000.
